A Staten Island afternoon at Snug Harbor

The Staten Island Ferry is a useful starting point for a day on the borough's North Shore. From Whitehall in Lower Manhattan, the free crossing reaches St. George in about 25 minutes. If you want to add a museum or garden visit, Snug Harbor gives you several options on one campus.

Start with the ferry

The city-operated Staten Island Ferry runs between Whitehall and St. George. It does not carry cars. Check the NYC DOT traveler information before setting out, then plan your onward trip from St. George separately. Snug Harbor is a separate destination, so leave time to reach it after the crossing.

Choose your main stop before leaving Manhattan. A museum visit gives the afternoon a different shape from a walk through the grounds. Knowing which you want helps you decide how much time to leave between the ferry and your return.

Separate the grounds from ticketed attractions

Snug Harbor's public gardens and outdoor grounds are free to explore. Some attractions on the campus charge admission, including the Chinese Scholar's Garden. A visit to the grounds does not automatically include entry to every building or garden.

The Discovery Pass covers one visit each to the Chinese Scholar's Garden, Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art, Noble Maritime Collection and Staten Island Museum. Check the pass details against the places you plan to enter. If you only want to spend time outside, you do not need it to visit the public grounds.

Give one museum enough time

The Staten Island Museum is on the Snug Harbor campus. Its work spans natural science, art and history. The museum's visit page has current opening hours and admission details, including information about the Discovery Pass.

Pick the exhibition or collection that interests you most and build the afternoon around it. You can leave the rest of the campus for another visit instead of rushing through several admissions in one day.

Check the campus before you travel

Snug Harbor currently lists partial weekday closures on Chapel Road during construction. Read its visitor information and current notices when planning your route through the campus. Opening hours and access can differ between attractions, even when the outdoor grounds are open.

Before leaving, check the ferry service information, the opening hours for your chosen attraction and the directions from St. George. Leave enough time for the return journey to the terminal.
